During the month of August, four of us who were members of a book study led by the Rev. Susan Brecht will engage the congregation with discussions on various chapters from Love is the Way: Holding onto Hope in Troubling Times by Bishop Michael Curry. Bishop Curry is the current Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, and what he shares in his book is a timely, inspiring, powerful message that we all need especially right now.
On Sunday, Susan, Stacy, Carole, and Lynne will discuss different themes and questions that Bishop Curry poses in Chapter One, entitled, “What is This Thing Called Love?” It lays the groundwork for the rest of the book, and is the perfect starting point for our August series centered on this book. Indeed, what IS love? How do we love others? How should we love ourselves and our neighbors, strangers we encounter in our daily lives, even those whom we consider to be our “enemies” – those who are different, those whom we categorize as “the other”?
Curry says, in his introduction, “The purpose of this book is to explain what the way of love looks like, even as we walk in a world that feels at times closer to a nightmare than to the dream. The way of love is how we stay decent during indecent times. … It’s for those who are fighting hard for a better world, and feeling very, very tired” (5). Come be part of the conversation, be part of the change, be part of the love and the hope for a better today and a better tomorrow. Come find out how to be the way of love.
